EV-2040 target dropped in favor of hybrids, gas + EV “worst of both.”
Honda’s retreat from 100% EV by 2040 into more hybrids is a losing trade—hybrids keep gas complexity without meaningful EV-only range.
Honda is withdrawing its 100% electric-by-2040 goal as “not realistic,” instead targeting net-carbon neutrality by 2050 via hybrid powertrains. Planned investment is about 4.4 trillion yen (almost $28 billion) for 15 hybrid launches by March 2030, but the KOL argues hybrids add gas maintenance and still deliver limited EV-only range, creating opportunity cost versus a pure BEV push.
